RGBY Utility Guide

The following tables contain every place where a utility item (an HM or the Bicycle) is required to access something.
All HM requirements are the same in all versions of Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow.

HM01 Cut
Location Object of interest
Viridian City Cut or Surf is required to access the NPC who gives you TM42 Dream Eater.
Route 2 Cut is required to access an HP Up, Moon Stone, and HM05 Flash.
Either Cut or access to Diglett's Cave is required to access the Mr. Mime trade.
Pewter City Cut is required to obtain the Old Amber in the back of Pewter Museum.
Route 25 Cut is required to access TM19 Seismic Toss if you did not lure the Trainer away from that area.
Route 9 Cut is required to access the route from Cerulean City.
Route 10 A hidden Super Potion can only be obtained by standing on a tile where the Cut tree was.
Route 8 Cut is required to access the grassy patch.
Celadon City Cut is required to access the Gym, as well as reach Erika inside it.
Route 12 Cut is required to access a Fisherman and an Iron.
The grassy patch is also only accessible with Cut.
Route 13 Cut is required to access the grassy patch.
Route 14 Cut is required to access the grassy patch.
Cut is also needed to access the top path of Route 15.
Route 15 Using Cut on Route 14 is required to access the top path of Route 15.
Route 16 Cut is required to access an NPC who gives you HM02 Fly.


HM03 Surf
Location Object of interest
Pallet Town Accessing Route 21 to the south requires Surf.
Viridian City Cut or Surf is required to access the NPC who gives you TM42 Dream Eater.
Route 4 Accessing the Lass requires Surfing from Route 24 through Cerulean.
Cerulean City Cerulean Cave is only accessible by surfing from Route 24 through Cerulean.
Route 24 Cerulean Cave is only accessible by surfing from Route 24 through Cerulean.
Cerulean Cave Cerulean Cave is only accessible by surfing from Route 24 through Cerulean.
Surf is also needed to access all areas of the cave.
Route 6 In Yellow, wild Pokémon can be encountered here with Surf.
Vermilion City Surf is required to access a Max Ether on the side of the building east of the Fan Club.
Route 10 The Power Plant, and the trainer outside it, are only accessible with Surf.
Power Plant Accessing the Power Plant requires Surfing from Route 10.
Celadon City Surf is required to access an NPC who gives you TM41 Softboiled.
Route 12 Surf is required to access TM16 Pay Day.
In Yellow, wild Pokémon can be encountered here with Surf.
Route 13 In Yellow, wild Pokémon can be encountered here with Surf.
Safari Zone Surf is required to access a Nugget.
Safari Zone is also easier to navigate with Surf.
Routes 19, 20, and 21 All three routes require Surf to navigate.
Seafoam Islands Accessing Seafoam Islands requires Surf, as does navigating it.
Cinnabar Island Accessing Cinnabar Island the first time requires Surf.
Route 23 Passing through the route requires Surf.


HM04 Strength
Location Object of interest
Fuchsia City Strength is required to access the Rare Candy in the Warden's house.
Seafoam Islands Strength is needed to navigate through, and to reach Articuno.
Victory Road Strength is needed to navigate.


HM05 Flash
Location Object of interest
Rock Tunnel Flash is recommended, but not required, for Rock Tunnel.


Bicycle
Location Object of interest
Routes 16, 17, and 18 A Bicycle is needed to access most of Routes 16 and 18, and all of Route 17.
